I’m a Customer Advisor in Welling Library during the week and a Senior Customer Advisor at Central Library on a Saturday. I’ve always loved the library – whilst at school I enrolled as a Children’s Event Volunteer and I was thrilled to secure a permanent position during a later recruitment process. . The library is a real hub for the community. We run weekly events such as Knit & Natter, Coding Club and Toddler Time which brings all different kinds of people through the library door, meaning my days are always really varied. We run the reading challenge in the summer holidays which is really popular with school children. We also run IT courses, helping beginners learn basic IT skills, which is really rewarding.

The library teams also work within the community visiting schools, promoting the library and reading stories to school children. I feel that my confidence has grown since I started working for the library. I was really shy at school but now I love singing along to a group of toddlers, in our weekly Toddler Time sessions!

We recently had a refurbishment of Welling Library and now host The Workary, which provides space for start-ups and businesses to work. It’s great that Bexley are supporting local businesses and it’s really interesting meeting all the different people who use the space.

Since joining Bexley, I’ve done a lot of on-the-job learning which has really suited me. I’ve always been supported in my role by my colleagues and manager and within two years, I’ve already progressed to a Senior Customer Advisor. There are so many opportunities to get involved in other projects too – I’ve been part of the team who are organising Book Buzz, Bexley’s first literary festival. In February 2018, Bexley will welcome renowned authors from around the world and host themed events – from the likes of Where’s Wally and Harry Potter.
